Is Fly Ash Hazardous?

Is fly ash hazardous? Many people wonder about this, especially when they have heard that fly ash is being used in their area. Fly ash is one of the products of the combustion of coal. It is sometimes disposed of in specially designated sites which are near to or within communities.

If this byproduct is being stored in your neighborhood, you may be a little concerned about the effect that this may have on the quality of the water in your area.

If coal is burnt near to you, you may also have an issue with the effect this may have on air quality. You have good reasons to be concerned. Fly ash causes respiratory problems when you breathe it in, so it is hazardous. In fact, some people have compared coal ash to asbestos for this reason.

Indiscriminate dumping of coal ash can lead to pollution of the air and water. However, regulated uses for coal ash have less of a negative impact on the environment.
